Is cash environmentally friendly?

When you hear paper and plastic which will you say is more environmentally friendly? Probably most people will say paper. Plastic has always one of the major factors that is damaging our environment. But can the same be said when it comes to paper cash and plastic credit cards.

It was fascinating to read about the energy used by both sides of payments. My original thought was that credit cards were worse for the environment since it uses plastic. And in my mind cash flows from place to place and was being reused.
With some 19 billion banknotes and 116 billion coins in circulation in the 19-nation euro area in 2015, increased card usage could reduce the region’s ecological footprint. More energy and resources are needed to facilitate cash transactions -- copper and tin are used for coin production, transport trucks burn fossil fuel, and ATMs consume electricity.
